Red Dot

In the past 10 years, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen has developed into an international communication and qualification centre for design-orientated industrial enterprises, design studios, communication and multimedia agencies.

In 1992, under the aegis of Peter Zec, the design prize awarded since 1955 gained a face: the “Red Dot”. The name of the award and the competition was born.

With over 4,000 entries from 40 countries, the red dot design award ranks among the largest design competitions worldwide. The competition is divided into two sections - product design and communication design - which are staged and adjudicated separately. The coveted trophy in both is the red dot, the international seal of quality for outstanding design.

The Essen-based institution regards design as an integral part of economic and technological promotion, and as an essential component in the striving for innovation and the encouragement of competition.
